Endobronchial Valve Technology

Stellar valve performance is at the centre of our design.

Effective endobronchial valve therapy requires the implanted device to perform two essential functions: precisely control air flow to the target lung region and prevent air from leaking around the device. The valve must also be designed to firmly adhere within a range of airway sizes to reduce the likelihood of dislodgement or cough-out, yet also minimize trauma to the patient’s airway in the event of removal.

The Zephyr® Endobronchial Valve is specifically designed to meet these performance criteria. The result is an EBV device combining superior, long-term performance1 for patients and ease-of-use for clinicians.

Zephyr Valve Design Features and Benefits:

Techical Platform

Concentric Design:
  • One-way valve is placed in the centre of the EBV device, isolated and protected by its retainer for consistent valve performance regardless of variations in airway anatomy or positioning
  • Minimises likelihood of tissue granulation impacting function of the valve
  • Minimises trauma to the patient's airway during removal
Flexible Retainer:
  • Expands to anchor the device in the airway and create an airtight seal against the bronchial wall to prevent air from leaking around the device
  • Helps shorten procedure time by eliminating the need for time-consuming size measurements prior to deployment
Valve Shape:
  • Ensures a maximum of "tissue purchase", or contact between the valve and the bronchial wall, significantly reducing the likelihood of dislodgement or cough-out
  • Diamond-shaped Nitinol retainer creates a smooth contact with the bronchial wall, without sharp points that may inadvertently cause trauma upon removal
Materials:
  • The entire device is coated in medical grade silicone, to prevent tissue growth through the Nitinol retainer
